Although images can be stored in various formats on your PC, the Jpeg file format is a form of image storage/compression which reduces the disk space for each image file whilst remaining almost undetectable to the human eye.

Compression ratios up to 1:20 can easily be achieved without much loss of quality. This can therefore save a lot of unnecessary disk space, for example 20GB can easily be reduced to 1GB, or even 20GB to 10GB is still a lot of saved space, especially if you're running out of storage for important applications or work-related files and you don't have the time/money to buy a new hard-disk.
