AirStop is a useful tool for IT professionals managing laptop computers with wireless adapters, who must control connectivity in order to ensure network security. The product is designed as an enterprise-class solution for both organizations who permit, and those who do not.
The term “bridging” refers to a computer which acts as a physical intermediary and protocol translator between two data communications networks. Therefore potential intruders can use any computer logged into the network as a bridge to mission critical servers and confidential information. In the past, intruders had to gain physical access to a networked computer in order to create a bridge to the network.
Fast forward to the present, and there is no need to physically attach a cable from one computer to another. Any computer with standard wireless adapter is an easy target for unauthorized wireless bridging. This means a potential intruder with a wireless laptop, sitting outside the office, can utilize the WiFi equipped laptop of a legitimate user as a bridge to the wired network.
Every laptop equipped with a wireless interface can actually become a backdoor to network resources in the enterprise and a launch pad for malicious activity.
Gaining unauthorized network access becomes possible when both the wired and wireless adapters are operated simultaneously. Therefore, protection against bridging attacks is possible by preventing simultaneous operation of the wired and wireless communications ports.
AirStop is a software-only solution which automatically disables wireless communications when a wired Ethernet connection is in use. Therefore a computer running AirStop cannot become a bridge between the wired and wireless networks. Other versions of AirStop can also be used to prevent simultaneous connectivity of wired networks and other communications adapters such as: Fax/Modems, dual band WiFi/GPRS adapters, Bluetooth and Disk-on-key/USB adapters.
AirStop prevents simultaneous operation of communications adapters thereby eliminating the possibility of unauthorized bridging.
